One Man Show?

Posted by Arch in , , , , ,

So over the past few days I have realized something that has really been in front of a lot of us since Senator John McCain (R,AZ) became the presumptive presidential nominee of the Republican party. The thing I have realized that this presidential election is really just a one man show. From the numerous conversations I have had with people concerning the two men left, who have a real shot at becoming the next president of the United States, I am not sure that I have met one person yet who are actual McCain supporters. If you read this, and are a McCain supporter, please leave a comment and let me know, especially if we've talked and I have overlooked our conversation with this comment. But in all honesty, I really feel that most people are either voting FOR Barack Obama or they are voting AGAINST him. There have are tons of rumors and slander that have been going on since Senator Obama (D,IL) stepped into the presidential arena. All that aside however, I feel like even his stance on policies people either really support him or really oppose him but I have not found the same to be true for John McCain. This cartoon below I found on a blog website that I believe supports my theory.

I found this cartoon on a blog that is supposed to be supporting John McCain but, as with several other McCain supporting blogs I found in my brief grazing for these types of blogs, I would quickly guesstimate that at least 50% of the posts on a lot of the blogs i found were actually taking shots at Obama rather than 'support' their candidate. Now, if you know me or have had almost any conversation with me this election year you know where I stand and who I support but that is not what this post is about.

When I was in college at Texas Tech I realized what it meant to actually be a supporter of my schools team and not just oppose another school or team. I believe that there are many people who don't know what they support but only what they oppose. Now in my conversations with more democratically aligned friends I hear, mostly but not always, support for Obama, however, in conversations with my more republican aligned friends I haven't found one person that is really happy with McCain. I hear it all the time on Fox News talk radio that conservatives are not happy with McCain but that cannot stand Obama! This is a little off putting to me. I have no real place to go with this blog other than to just put it out there for comments or theories of any other nature. Let me know what you think, do you think that this election is coming down to "To Obama or not To Obama"? Or do you really feel McCain has solid ground to stand on. My opinion is that he is more or less coasting into the White House if he wins. Rather on CNN or Fox News it's a rare day I hear anything other than Pro or Con Obama and hardly ever do I hear/see something on Pro/Con McCain. Just drop some thoughts.

Hey Arch, it seems to have become trite going as far back as I can remember in politics (um... the Carter election), but this election is more about the "lesser of two evils" than any I remember. Obama is definitely one who polarizes people. Contrary to what the media would have us believe, most of the "Obama bashers" that I have had conversations with simply detest his policies. Personally, McCain was probably my 3rd or 4th choice as a nominee among Republicans. I don't like his policies on global warming, on immigration, on class warfare, and several others. But I don't find ONE single policy that Obama puts forth that I agree with. For me, this election isn't about whether McCain is a worthy nominee, it's about the fact that Obama is the most dangerous, radical, socialist candidate I have ever seen, whose economic policies will destroy this nation. This IS about Obama, in my opinion.
On last thing... I don't believe this election can be likened to hiring a manager of a store. In that case, you hold up two resumes and decide who is better able to lead and manage and market. In a presidential election, it is also about the direction the candidate wants to lead, the method of management, and the types of things the candidate wil be marketing.
... maybe I've only muddied the waters.

No, that is exactly what I am talking about. The election has so much less to do with McCain than it does Obama. If McCain wins it will be because he is the default rather than the man we believe, as a country, can lead our country into prosperity. You and I have had enough discussions on this topic where we know where each other stand. But you prove my theory quite well, I am not sure if most will vote FOR McCain but rather AGANIST Obama. I think we should have four boxes at the polls in November.....one FOR Obama, one AGAINST Obama, one FOR McCain and another AGAINST McCain. And then each AGAINST vote for the candidates would cancel out a FOR vote and if the AGAINST's outway the FOR's then we throw the candidates out and try again.

I guess I am saying what difference does it make? What's the point of a Presidential election? Are we looking for someone "special"? My choice is that no matter what, I don't want Obama to be president, or anyone else, male or female, black, white, or purple that is like him. That is my value. That is my highest priority. The fact that according to my belief system, the most important thing is to see that someone like Obama does not get elected IS a reason to vote for someone else. If your point is that McCain is unelectable, I would argue the other way. I guess I've lost track of what you are getting at, because to me, who Obama is makes my vote an easy choice.

Also, if prosperity is your goal, you might want to take a closer look at Obama's ideas about "capturing" income from American citizens. That was my point about the election being so different than hiring someone in a leadership position. If I were on the hiring board of a church, I wouldn't hire an atheist as a pastor, regardless of his credentials as a leader.
